Hi Genderbuzzers, I’m Jane Davidson and I’m a Digital Content writer.
I recently wrote those important words for the first time, ‘I’m a writer’. Even as I’m writing this about being able to support you with your writing, it might seem obvious that I’m a writer but it has taken a while for the penny to drop with me. Whilst this might not seem a great way to promote my business here on Genderbuzz®, I feel fellow women will understand that we often strive to be the best we can be at something, before giving ourselves the appropriate ‘title’. I’ve been writing professionally for over 5 years and was first asked to write for a veterinary newspaper because of my twitter activity and my training as a veterinary nurse. I now run the successful and award winning hashtag #planetrvn creating a community for vets nurses and vets. When I started #planetrvn, it caught the eye of the some digital editors and 5 years on I write quite a lot – for money, I might add💰
How I honed my skills – Blogs and Books
Writing seemed to come quite naturally to me and while that’s great, writing is still a craft that needs some work. I first became established as a blogger and now write for 3 companies every month however, I still wanted to stretch my skills and write in different formats. While my blogging is often based around science or professional issues, it remains a more relaxed style of writing and I wanted to prove I could write for different needs.
As a veterinary nurse I felt qualified to write academic articles on clinical and professional issues which have been published in an international peer-reviewed journal. I initially promised myself that I’d write one article a year, but I actually managed three in 2017!
As a result of this, my work was noted on LinkedIn and a publisher approached me to write A BOOK! The subject matter was one close to my heart and is on research and study skills for academic success in the sciences. I submitted it last month and it’s been an amazing journey for me and has really improved my writing skills.
For me, the book was the turning point where I was finally able to say ‘I am a writer’. I’d set myself some goals for writing and hit them all. Maybe six years is a long time, maybe it shows how much I need my writing to be good. Either way I’m now ready to support others in creating their message that they need to share. Writing has given me the opportunity to lead and support a community and share some important messages.
Now I want to share my skills with others
If you have a business, you will need to write copy and content for your digital channels. Yes, other people can write for you – I do it all the time, but there are times when the voice that is needed is YOUR unfiltered voice and I can give you the skills, space and time to make that happen. My basis for writing and creating has always been altruistic and I’m an educator at heart too.
